If you’re feeling like you’ve outgrown your clothes, you can re-invent yourself, and come out the other end feeling energized and more like yourself. But you don’t have to burn all your old clothes, and go out and buy a whole new wardrobe to do it.

Once you know what kind of style feels like you, what you’d like to wear, you can go through all the clothes you have, and see what can be:

  • Altered: You can colour it, add some details, or make small alterations to make it fit better.
  • Re-fashioned: Make it look different by changing its shape. For example making a round neck t-shirt into a v-neck t-shirt.
  • Re-purposed: Make it into something completely different. For example making an over-sized shirt into a dress.

Anything that can’t fit into one of those three categories, you can:

  • Sell it: Used clothes and shoes that are still in good shape can be sold.
  • Donate it: Give it to someone who likes it, or to those who need it more than you do.
  • Recycle it: If it’s stained or worn out, you can still use it. Old sweatpants make good washcloths, for example. If you can’t use it for anything at all, put it in the recycling bin, not the waste bin or the bonfire.

But even the worn out can be turned into something new. Take a look at the sweater coat and hooded scarf in the examples below.

Here are some examples from Pinterest of what you can create out of basic clothes.
