In this episode, I will talk about how you can challenge your creative spirit. I’m also going to give you a creative prompt, something you can do easily and in a short amount of time, to get some creative play into your day.

A small caution might be in order. If you’re sensitive to language, I must warn you that the occasional swear word might slip through the cracks when I edit. That might happen if I’m talking about something I’m particularly passionate about.

To challenge your creative spirit

If life has gotten a bit boring, or you just want to have some fun, why not challenge yourself? Set a challenge, which fits into your life, and jump in with both feet. I’ve challenged myself to do some kind of artwork every day in 2015, and I’ve challenged myself to do 100 symbols. I also frequently challenge myself to do things in new ways and try new things.

Today, I’m giving you a couple of cool ways you can challenge your creative spirit to come alive.

Try something completely new
Go way outside your comfort zone and try a form of creative expression you’ve never tried before. It’s always fun to try new things, even if you’re not good at them, and it’s great for your creative mind too.

Do what you do differently
Do your thing, but add a twist. Change the technique or materials. Use a different viewpoint, if it’s photography, or a different pattern if it’s for example crochet. If you need ideas, I bet I have some for you.

Do what you do in a different location
Instead of doing your thing in a well-known location, change your surroundings. You don’t have to be in your office, your studio or your living room to create. A change of scenery is really good for creating new things. It’s perfectly possible to write while sitting in a tree, or paint on the beach.

Combine different things you do, that you wouldn’t combine otherwise
Let’s say you draw and you embroider. Why not use stitches to enhance your drawing? You can add stitches to the paper or draw on fabric.

Use someone else’s idea to create something
Let someone else come up with an idea, and then you do your best to implement it. Like I did with Lilith’s mittens last year. I let her colour a pattern and then did my best to knit those exact mittens. I actually just drew an outline of a mitten for her, and let her go wild with her fine-liners.

Today’s inspirational words are by May Sarton and she says: “We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be”. Being yourself is, in my opinion, the only sustainable way to live. If you’re adapting who you are to other people’s opinions, or what you think their opinions may be, there will come a day when you can’t do that anymore, and everything comes crashing down.

We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be - May Sarton

Today’s Creative Prompt is to take your camera or the camera on your phone and go outside. Take some pictures where you play around with the viewpoint. For example shooting from the hip or upside down.
