Sibylle Leon is a close friend of mine, and a fellow pagan and entrepreneur who wanted to tell a story about one of the times her intuition helped her make the right decision.
In Summer of 2012, I was catapulted out of my comfort zone when my lovely landlord and family announced they were moving to Australia, their house would be sub-let, and the extension I lived in, closed off. In other words, I had to find a new place to live. Now I’m in the process of saving up for a deposit on my own little cottage, but even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to afford to normal rents in my area.
When I started looking around, by far the cheapest I could find was a tiny one-room flat for 750 Euro a month. I had been paying 600 including electricity and heating with my landlord – did I mention they are lovely people? – and was getting very, very scared. In the following week or two I obsessively checked Ireland’s main property letting website, made lists, phoned potential landlords, stressed, and finally found another small extension to a house, for the same price as my old flat. It was smaller and a little dodgy and the landlord made me uneasy, but I was so relieved I’d found something I could afford, I pushed all worries aside. I WANTED this to work out.
Weeks before I was even due to move in, the landlord turned out to be a crook. Suddenly heat and electricity weren’t included in the 600 Euro rent anymore. I diskovered more and more things in the new flat that didn’t work. The landlord lied to me on more than one occasion and then tried to twist my own words into meaning I had agreed to something I hadn’t. I tried to tell myself that once I’d moved in, I wouldn’t see much of him, and everything would be ok. At the same time, my intuition tried to nudge its way through with doubts and very strong misgivings, but I was so stressed and so busy talking myself into moving to that place, I couldn’t hear it. Eventually, I nearly cracked.
You see, when we’re stressed and tense, it becomes very hard to tell what our intuition is trying to tell us. Our deep inner wisdom is true as always, but we cannot access it – it’s like it’s buried under the clutter of our worries and stress. I’m usually well in touch with my intuition, but in the above situation, I couldn’t tell whether it was my misgivings or my optimism that were the actual voice of my intuition. I tried to relax, to let go and trust. It was easier said than done. The place where we live is so fundamental a need, I was far too scared and stressed to be able to let go. In the end, I decided to access my intuition with the help of tools – my tarot cards and a pendulum. Both said with absolute clarity to cancel the agreement with that crook.
To avoid misunderstandings: I did not rely on “magical” means for a life-changing decision. Divination tools don’t use “supernatural” powers to work, the way Hollywood movies try to make us believe. In fact, they are high-precision tools to access our subconscious. It’s our subconscious that moves the pendulum or makes us see certain things and not others in the tea leaves or the crystal ball. I called off the deal, and all of a sudden I became very calm. Instead of starting to check the property letting website every five minutes again, I took a deep breath, grounded and centered, and then asked myself what I really wanted.
I wrote out a list of features my ideal flat would have, features like affordable rent, nice honest landlord or landlady, safe surroundings, pet-friendly, with broadband available… I created a free “Search” ad of my own on the property website and described myself: Dependable, not likely to have wild parties, but comes with 4 budgies and loves music. The very next day I was contacted by a lovely woman who said she had a “granny flat”/ extension to let. I went to see it that evening: lovely landlady, tiny but beautiful flat with wooden floors and shiny new bathroom and kitchen… – in fact, it fulfillled ALL the criteria on my list. And it costs 540 Euro a month including bills.
If I hadn’t insisted on finding out what my intuition was saying, and then listened to it without question, I would have ended up in that dodgy place, paying through my nose and unhappy. As it is, I’ve spent the last 1 1/2 years next to a lovely family, in a good area, and in a flat both I and my budgies love in spite of the rather small space. I’m very, very glad I went with my intuition.
