Remember I told you about sacrificing my creativity in last Monday’s post? Well, I didn’t just sacrifice my creativity, I sacrificed reading too. There’s self-sacrifice for you.
I’ve always been an avid reader. Before I started working I read up to 500 books a year, and once I read 47 books in 7 days. I read a regular sized paperback in about 1,5 hours. The reason being that I’ve been reading books since I was 5, and I love it. I don’t own that many books, so I used to trawl the library weekly. In all the places I’ve lived, the librarians have known me. In part because I made them find and bring a lot of books from the vaults. When people ask me what my favorite book is, I’m never able to give them an answer. I don’t have one favorite book, I have favorite authors. These are some of them:
- Kathy Reichs
- Jeffery Deaver
- Anne Rice
- Margit Sandemo
- Agatha Christie
- Stephen King
When I started working, I didn’t have as much time to read, and bit by bit I lost energy as well. So when I had my daughter, I stopped reading. I was running on fumes every day, energy-wise. She had to be fed every hour 24/7, and I did everything. Just as if I had been a single parent, which I’m not. So there wasn’t anything left for me, and it took its toll in health issues and relationship problems. After I stopped working a regular job, because of my health, I started getting my energy back, as well as the time to read.
So I brought my books down from the attic and put them in the bookshelf next to my bed. You can see them in the picture in this post, and yes I know I’m not the tidiest person around 😀 I started setting aside 30 minutes to read every night. Since then I’ve been reading more and more. But since I’m running a business now, I can’t get back up to 500. One “bad” habit that’s returned is not being able to stop reading a good book, so I end up staying up too late, a little bit too often. But I’ll take care of that soon. A plus that comes with being your own boss is being able to take a nap when you need it.
Do you read? What books are your favorites?

It’s funny, isn’t it, how we sacrifice part of ourselves when we’re stressed. For me it was music. I almost stopped listening to music for a while when my life was out of whack. I had to actually remind myself to put on music, something I had lived and breathed since I was a very small child.
I’m glad you took your books back! 🙂
Yes, it is. I dropped the music too. 🙂 So am I
Yes I know that one about reading too late! 😉
I also love that being self employed allows a choice of how to use time, great that you embrace this
I tihnk most readers do. With all the other things going on here, I have to pick my times 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Julia
