In this episode, I will talk about how you can make it easier for yourself to be creative. I’m also going to give you a creative prompt, something you can do easily and in a short amount of time, to get some creative play into your day.

A small caution might be in order. If you’re sensitive to language, I must warn you that the occasional swear word might slip through the cracks when I edit. That might happen if I’m talking about something I’m particularly passionate about.

Make it easier for yourself to be creative

Today I want to give you a tip that will make it easier for you to start being creative on a regular basis. To actually get somewhere with your projects, even if you don’t have much time.

Keep your tools and supplies where you can reach them. Keep them where they’re readily available when you get an idea, or when you have a moment to create something. That way you don’t have to spend a lot of time and energy to get them to where you can do something with them. If you keep them in a cupboard or a storage room, like I used to do, you really won’t use them often.

It’s just human nature we don’t do what’s difficult if we can avoid it. So make sure you have your tools and supplies where you can reach them easily. There are lots of good storage solutions out there.

Figure out when during the day you’re the most creative, and do your creations then. Everyone has a prime time for creativity. For some, it’s first thing in the morning. For others, it’s after the family’s asleep. Find your time, to maximize the chance of you actually doing it.

Try to inject creativity into other things you do. Whether that’s at work or at home. Sing when you do the dishes, doodle during a meeting, and involve your kids in creative stuff. It makes it a lot easier to keep going.

Make sure to get some new impressions during the week. Because to get new ideas, you need to new information and new impressions into your brain, so you can create something new out of them. Take a different route home, watch something different on TV, go out into Nature and go somewhere you haven’t been before.

Stop multi-tasking! Women are chronic multi-taskers, and we need to reprogram ourselves so we’re able to finish things like housework faster and have more time for what we love. Multi-tasking actually makes things take longer. If you’re multi-tasking, and you get distracted by a call, your kids, or something else, it’s very easy to lose track of what you were doing. We all have those distractions. But avoiding multi-tasking actually makes it lot easier to get back on track. You’re more in control of what you’re doing at any given time, and it’s easier to remember where you left off. So turn off your notifications and focus on one thing when you want it done.

Make sure, again, to involve your kids in your creative pursuits. Because it’s great for them, and it’s also great for you.

If you’re having problems being creative, don’t be afraid to reach out to me for a cup of tea and a conversation. It will be a very casual conversation, I don’t bite 🙂

Today’s inspirational words are by Eugene Delacroix, and he says: “The artist who aims at perfection in everything achieves it in nothing”. I’ve been preaching for a long time that perfection is an illusion, and I truly believe that. It’s something we will never reach. It’s better to put your personality and your spirit into the things you create, than trying to get them perfect.

Today’s Creative Prompt is to get some paint on your fingers. It doesn’t matter if it’s your kids’ watercolours, just try finger painting today. It’s a lot of fun if you allow it to be.

If you’re planning on giving away something handmade for Christmas, either buying it or making it yourself, you need to start now. Now is the time to get going, because it takes time to make those things. There are only 8 weeks left until the gifts have to be finished and delivered.

Thanks, Linda. I love the suggestion to keep your creative materials close at hand. I keep a small notebook with me at all times – I just stopped in the middle of the street to ‘capture’ and idea before it flitted away! xox, Reba

Thanks Reba 🙂 Having a notebook (or a notepad on your phone) is very useful. You can also record audio or video if you don’t have it handy

Linda, I use the note app on my phone to capture ideas while I’m out & about. I use the voice recording on it, so even when I’m walking the dog, I can save it before I forget it! Thanks!

I do that too 🙂 Ideas can fly out of your head as fast as they fly in 🙂
