Today I want to have a serious talk with you about that to-do list of yours.
First of all; stop adding things that don’t need to be on that list! If it’s not
If it’s not resonating with you, if it doesn’t have to get done by you (could be delegated), if it’s not bringing you closer to your goals, don’t add it to the list. Don’t spend all day cleaning, when you could be playing with your kids or spending time with friends instead. If you have to clean, do it in smaller portions. Don’t let it take over your entire day.
Write down everything that’s on your list for today. I’ll wait…. Now take the first item, and put it up against the second. Which one is more important to get done today? Then you continue down the list until you’ve gotten rid of what doesn’t have to be on today’s list. Those things might still have to get done, but not today. The idea is to end up with three major tasks to do today. There will always be smaller things and things that come up unexpectedly, but I hope you’ll agree that three feels a lot less overwhelming than twenty.
Let me know in the comments what your three things for today are.
Thank you.
I needed this today.
Thank you! 🙂
My pleasure 🙂 I’m glad it did some good
Great ideas. I do smaller loads thru the day. I use it as my excuse to get up often to stretch & walk around.
Like the idea of organizing in order of importance.
Getting up to stretch is a really good thing to do 🙂
It’s night for me today so my top things still to do are to brush my teeth, read a little bit, and then sleep, LOL!
These are 3 must-do things, don’t you agree, Linda? 🙂
Those are 3 top things 🙂 especially sleep.
Ha! I always make these mile long lists and I like your strategy of putting one task against another to whittle that list down. Today my top three are to take out the trash/recycling, make a shopping list and skype with my parents!
I’ve been there myself 😀 Sounds like good things 🙂 at least the Skype call.
Thank you for this…I am a list maker…I feel like I have so many balls to juggle (4 kids) that if I don’t have a list I will forget something! I prioritize my list as well, this helps.
I need a list as well, since I had my daughter. I can imagine what 4 is like 🙂 Prioritizing is essential to stay sane 🙂
Linda – love your post!!! 🙂 I’m all about lists and prioritizing. Something I’ve found helpful is to pretend I can get everything on my list completed except one thing – and cross that one thing off. I keep doing that until I’ve whittled my list down to 3. Those 3 items then are scheduled in my calendar at a certain time slot! They now have more importance!
That’s a really good way too 🙂
Story of my life! I’m always putting too much on my to-do list, mainly because I have so many ideas I want to try. I do have to stop and delegate or I will get out of control though. Thanks for the tips! 🙂
I don’t think you’re alone in that 🙂 My pleasure
I have a master to do list and then pick things from it to add to my daily to do list. This ensures that I am focussed purely on what needs to be done that day!
I have something similar. I use Trello to keep it all in one place, and then I pick today’s tasks from there.
