This week in my Creative Explorers group, the prompt was to use one of these creative experiments to create something. Because I’m working on a series of symbols using watercolour, I chose to work in watercolour, so I’d get a background for a new symbol.
I decided to use plastic wrap. I’ve used it before, but I haven’t shown you how to yet. So I wanted to do that today.
I started by wetting the paper thoroughly and splashing on some watercolour. I then covered the sheet with plastic wrap and pulled at it to create some peaks and valleys.
You can pull and push the plastic any way you want, making it look like mountains, waves, anything you can think of. The paint will pool where there’s a peak, and be pushed away where there’s a valley. This technique will work with any water medium (watercolour, acrylics, gouache).
Wise from previous experiments with acrylics and plastic wrap, I let it dry before I removed the plastic.
I think it produced a very interesting pattern, which suits the symbol I’ve planned to paint on it.
Linda,
Reading this and seeing the photos makes me yearn for the times when my daughter was younger and we did crafts. It’s inspiring me to call her (she’s 22 now) and plan some artsy-crafty time together!

Do it 🙂 Age makes no difference
How fun Linda and I love the colors that you used! I can see this as a great ‘me’ time exercise and will definitely give it a try this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
Thanks Marquita 🙂 I’d love to see how it turns out
How fun, Linda! And such a wonderful reminder to create, explore, play!
Thanks 🙂 It is fun. We all need to play more
This is beautiful and so clever! Amazing what results come from everyday household things! I may have to try this with Master Beastie!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks Kimberly 🙂 It’s easy and fun. Prefect for kids
