In this episode, I will talk about how you can make it easier for yourself to be creative. I’m also going to give you a creative prompt, something you can do easily and in a short amount of time, to get some creative play into your day.

A small caution might be in order. If you’re sensitive to language, I must warn you that the occasional swear word might slip through the cracks when I edit. That might happen if I’m talking about something I’m particularly passionate about.

How you can go on a creative adventure

We all need to go on an adventure now and then, whether it’s exploring a new location, experimenting with our personal style, spiritual journeying, or exploring something in the creative realm.

I’m going to stick to the creative stuff for this podcast, journeying is for the other one. I love to explore, mainly because I’m very curious. So I do it often, in one way or another. That’s one reason my art doesn’t all look the same.

For all creatives, the first tip I have is to go somewhere new. Take your work with you where you wouldn’t normally go, and explore the new surroundings and the effect they have on your creations. You might not think that, for example, a sculptor would be able to take their work elsewhere, but it is possible. You just have to scale it to a size where you can take it with you.

Let’s pick another field of work, and say you love to take pictures. One way would be to explore new ways of taking pictures, new tools or settings. I have some suggestions on my Photography board on Pinterest, along with tips and tricks. It’s amazing what you can do with just a plastic bag.

If drawing is your thing, you can try a new technique or tool, or maybe a completely different subject. Maybe you usually draw people, then try birds. Birds are radically different from those you can ask to stay still. If rapid movement is a bit scary, then try plants. They’re a bit better at staying still.

Do you knit or crochet? Maybe you knit socks for your family or crochet table cloths or clothes for yourself. Then you might think that I’d recommend a new pattern, but I’ve done that before. What I’d love to have you try is sculpting with yarn. That will give you a new feel for the material. I have a link with an example of what you can do in the show notes.

If you do quilts in a traditional style, you could try making a more painting-like style, building pictures from fabric shapes. You can make some amazing quilts that way. You can even try putting your fabric on a canvas. I’ve seen some amazing artwork created from fabric.

Take it to the edge of what you think is possible, and walk through the gate. Go on a creative adventure this week. If you need ideas, I’ll find some for you. You only have to ask.

Today’s inspirational words are by Eleanor Roosevelt, and she says: “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience”. Go for what you love, even if you have to take baby steps to get there.

Today’s Creative Prompt is to plan the decorations for your next seasonal holiday. Think about if you really want to do it the same way as last year, or if you want to create something new.

The October Creativity Challenge ended on Saturday. As usual it’s been amazing to see all the beautiful things you create, and meeting old and new creatives. Some of those who joined the challenge has been in every single one since 2012. The next one will be in April, and it’s possible to sign up now if you’d like to.

Lilith and I started Halloween by volunteering at the local spooky lantern walk in the next town. I did my ritual just before midnight after the others were in bed, and the house was quiet. If you’d like to know more about what I do at this time of year, there’s a link to a recent blog post in the show notes.

That’s it for me for today. Thanks for listening to the Creative Explorer Podcast. The next episode will, among other things, be about what to do when you’re out of creative juice.
