Medicine

This is an overview over all the recipes. The menu above has them separated into categories.

Herbal Medicine

Medicinal tea

To 1 tsp dried, crushed flowers of Ox Eye Daisy add 1 cup boiling water, steep for 10 min. strain and sweeten to taste.

Borage Infusion

Infusion on 10-30g (~0.4-1 oz) of the herb with 5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of water. 1⁄3-1⁄2 glass 2-3 times a day.

Nose ointment

1 tbsp crumbled Marjoram
1 tbsp 96 % alcohol
20 g (~0.7 oz) of soft butter

Mix Marjoram and alcohol, and let it sit covered over night. Filter and mix the sediment with the butter. Must be kept in the refrigerator. Use your finger to anoint your nostrils several times a day. Distribute it evenly by pressing your nostrils together.

Tea against mouth cavity problems

2 tsp of finely cut Oak bark
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Boil it for 5 minutes and then strain it. Drink 2 times a day.

Toothache I

Make an infusion from Lady's Mantle and use it as gurgle water.

Toothache II

Make a decoction from hips and use it as gurgle water.

Tincture against mouth cavity infection

10 g (~0.35 oz) of coarsely cut Tormentil
100 ml (~3.4 fl oz) of 70 % alcohol

Leave for 5 days, shake often. Strain and filter, drink schnapps after meals.

Gurgle water, mouth rinse

2 1⁄2 tsp of Thyme
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of boiling water

Make an infusion which is allowed to sit for 15 minutes, strain.

Mouth water

3-6 drops of aroma oil in hot water. Tea tree oil is antibiotic, salt water is also effective. Sage oil and Sage decoction has a soothing, antiseptic effect. A mixture of Lemon, Myrrh and Sage oil makes a good gurgle mixture.

Tincture for colds

100 g (~3.5 oz) of crushed Juniper berries
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of 70 % alcohol

Leave for 2 weeks, stir now and then. Strain and filter. Rub it in.

Chickweed tea

To 1 tbsp dried herb, 2 if fresh, add 1 cup boiling water steep for 10 min. Take in 1⁄2 cup doses 2 to 4 times daily, during a cold or flu.

Cough tea

To make a tea, use two teaspoons of dried Thyme per cup of boiling water and steep for ten minutes. Add Sage to the tea if you have a nagging cough.

Couching I

2 tsp of Basil
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of water

Make an infusion and drink 1 cup 2 times a day.

Coughing II

1 tsp of Blueberry leaves
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Pour boiling water over the leaves and let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

Coughing III

Place some fresh Oregano leaves in a pitcher and fill it with water, Let it stand in the refrigerator. Drink the water now and then.

Coughing and bronchitis

1 tsp of crushed Anise seeds
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Pour the boiling water over the seeds, let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 1 cup 2-6 times a day, with honey if you like. Don't crush the seeds until you're going to use them.

Mycolytic

1 tsp of Thyme
3 dl (~10.1 fl oz) of boiling water

Make an infusion. Cover and leave for 20 minutes, strain. Drink 3-4 times a day.

Bath for the circulation

100 g (~3.5 oz) of Horsetail
1 l (~33.8 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 1 hour, strain and pour in the bath water.

Tea for the digestion I

1 tsp of dried Nettle
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Pour the boiling water over the herbs, let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

Tea against diarrhea I

3 tbsp of Blueberries
1⁄2 l (~16.9 fl oz) of water

Boil for 10 minutes, strain.

Tea against gas I

1 tsp of Blueberry leaves
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Pour boiling water over the leaves and let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

Tea for the digestion II

1 tsp of crushed Anise seeds
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Pour the boiling water over the seeds, let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 1 cup 2-6 times a day, with honey if you like. Don't crush the seeds until you're going to use them.

Overfullness and gas

20 g (~0.7 oz) of Anise seeds
20 g (~0.7 oz) of Fennel
20 g (~0.7 oz) of Caraway
20 g (~0.7 oz) of Coriander
20 g (~0.7 oz) of Angelica root

Take 1 tsp of the mixture and let it sit in 2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water for 10 minutes. Drink a cup after meals.

Appetite stimulating tea I

1⁄2 tsp of Buckbean
2 dl (~6.8 fl oz) of water

Make an infusion. 1-2 tsp 4-5 times a day, a half hour before meals.

Appetite stimulating tea II

4 tsp of Hip leaves
1⁄2 l (~16.9 fl oz) of boiling water

Make an infusion and let it sit for 10 minutes, strain and drink.

Tea against diarrhea II

1 tbsp of finely cut Tormentil
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Boil for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 2-3 times a day.

Tea against gas II

1 tbsp dried, cut leaves of Lemonbalm
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink a cup 3 times a day.

Appetite stimulating tea III

1 tsp of Thyme
3 dl (~10.1 fl oz) of boiling water

Make an infusion. Cover and leave for 20 minutes, strain. Drink 3-4 times a day 30 minutes before meals.

Tea against gas III

1 tsp of Thyme
3 dl (~10.1 fl oz) of boiling water

Make an infusion. Cover and leave for 20 minutes, strain. Drink 3-4 times a day 30 minutes before meals.

Cabbage juice

This drink is good for your tummy and also general diet and nutrition. Make carrot juice from 3 medium carrots. Combine 1⁄4 head of cabbage (slice it to fit your home juicer) and 1 stalk of celery (save the pulp for coleslaw). Juice 5 pitted cherries. This fruit and vegetable juicing yields 1⁄4 cups of soothing juice.

Plantain Syrup

Mash the plant, filter the liquid. Mix it with sugar in the same proportion, diluting it previously by putting the pot in hot water. Take three spoonfuls a day.

Urethral problems I

2 tsp of Basil
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of water

Make an infusion and drink 1 cup 2 times a day.

Blood purifying, diuretic juice

Rinse a basket of young nettles, run a handful of them in a blender with 1⁄2 l (~16.9 fl oz) of water or light buttermilk, dilute with with mineral water. Freezable.

Diuretic tea

1 topped tsp of dried and crushed Juniper berries
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of water

Pour the boiling water over the berried and let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink 1-2 cups a day.

Diuretic syrup

100 g (~3.5 oz) Juniper berries (whole)
1 tbsp of cut Ginger
500 g (~17.6 oz) of sugar
1 l (~33.8 fl oz) of water

Boil the herbs in the water for about 1 hour, strain and push the berries through a strainer. This makes about 1⁄2 l (~16.9 fl oz) of juice. Boil juice and sugar for 10 minutes from when it starts to boil. Fill into a bottle while it's still hot. Take 1 tsp after meals 2 times a day. Stir first.

Antispasmodic tea

1 tbsp of dried, cut leaves from Lemon Balm
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 10 minutes, strain. Drink a cup 3 times a day.

Fertility-enhancing infusion

Take one ounce by weight of the dried blossoms (fresh won't work for this application) and put them in a quart size canning jar. Fill the jar with boiling water, screw on a tight lid, and let it steep at room temperature overnight (or for at least four hours).

It is especially helpful if there is scaring of the fallopian tubes, irregular menses, abnormal cells in the reproductive tract, or "unexplained" infertility. It may take several months for the full effect of this herb to come on and pregnancy may not occurs until you have used it for a year or two. You can improve the taste by including some dried peppermint (a spoonful or two) along with the dried clover blossoms when making your infusion. Treat the father of the child-to-be to some red clover infusion, too!

Infusion
For an infusion, steep 2 teaspoons of flowering tops in 1⁄2 cup boiling water for 15 minutes. Take 1 to 1 1⁄2 cups a day with or without honey. For a tincture the dose is from 5-30 drops, taken in water.

Monthly teas

Mix 1 part lavandula augustifolia; 1 part achillea millefolium; 1 part capsella bursa pastoris; 1 part cinnamon; 2 parts matricaria chamomilla.
Take 1 tsp for each cup, put hot water and let it soak 10 min.
1 tsp alchemilla vulgaris for 1 cup of hot water. Let it soak about 5 min.

Wash

2 tsp of Basil
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of water

Make an infusion and wash the wound carefully.

Bandage for cuts and boils

6 tbsp of dried Chamomile
1 l (~33.8 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 10 minutes. Use cotton for the wrapping and let it work for a couple of hours.

Antiseptic compress

1 tsp of Thyme
3 dl (~10.1 fl oz) of boiling water

Make an infusion. Cover and leave for 20 minutes, strain. Wet the compress and place it on the wound.

Compress

2 1⁄2 tsp of Thyme
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 15 minutes, strain.

Soothing tea

20 g (~0.7 oz) of fresh leaves from Lemonbalm
1 l (~33.8 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 10 minutes. Drink a cup up to 3 times a day.

Strengthening evening tea

Let 2-4 g (0.07-0.14 oz) of Lady's Mantle sit over night in cold water.

Strengthening tea

3 tbsp of dried Iceland Lichen
2 1⁄2 dl (~8.5 fl oz) of boiling water

Let it sit for 15 minutes, strain. Drink without sweetener, preferably together with fennel.

Tincture for rheumatism

100 g (~3.5 oz) of crushed Juniper berries
5 dl (~16.9 fl oz) of 70 % alcohol

Leave for 2 weeks, stir form time to time. Strain and filter. Rub it in.

Goat Willow decoction for pain

Take 20 g (~0.7 oz) dried Goat Willow bark or 40 g (~1.4 oz) fresh and let it boil gently in 3.4 l (~115 fl oz) of water for 30 minutes. I.e. until it's down to 1.2 l (~40.6 fl oz). Drink half a liter, spread over 3-4 doses every day. If kept in the refrigerator, the decoction keeps for 2 to 3 days.

Colt's Foot tea

The leaves of the Colt's Foot is a powerful analgesic agent. Make tea on 2 dl (~6.8 fl oz) of water and 2 tbsp of dried leaves. Drink it as hot as possible. The pain's gone before you've finished the cup. Do not use frequently due to the alkaloids.

Soporific agents

  • Milk with 1 tbsp of honey
  • Peppermint tea
  • Chamomile tea (Chamaemelum nobile)
  • Linden flower tea
  • Tea on Lady's Mantle flowers
  • Valerian tea
  • Sage tea
  • Bergamot tea
  • Mint tea
  • Tea on equal parts of Lady's Mantle and Cowslip
  • Warm Lemon or Grapefruit juice

Soothing drink for colds I

2 egg yolks
1 tbsp of sugar
1 tbsp of vinegar (5 % or 7 %)
1 tbsp of salad oil

Whisk the ingredients together and drink.

Soothing drink for colds II

3 egg yolks
3 tbsp full cream
1 glass of brandy
15 drops of purified turpentine (pharmacy)

Mix it all and take 1 tbsp of the drink every hour.
(Warning: Remember that purified turpentine is something completely different from regular turpentine. Make sure you get the right kind.)

Vitamine drink

1 tbsp black currant jam
1 squeezed lemon
1 glass of water

Mix and let it sit for 15 minutes, warm and strain before drinking.

Bruises and Sprains

  • Arnica in 6x strength for chock. One dose immediately and another one a half hour later.
  • You can use Arnica cream. Don't use this on open wounds.
  • Use Camphor ointment or home made Camphor oil on sore areas.
  • Use diluted apple cider vinegar on the wound and wet a piece of cloth to wrap around it.

Swelling, gout, inflammation without wound

Extract from Birch leaves, Mayweed, Juniper berries. Rub it on as an embrocation. This stings, so put a piece of cloth between it and the skin.
