Salt Dough

To make salt dough, you only need a few ingredients:

2 cups of flour
1 scant cup of regular salt
¾ cup of water

Mix it all together bowl. Knead the dough well without adding any more water. It’ll be dry in the beginning, but it gets moister after a bit of kneading. Add as little water as possible! Roll it out on a table with a lot of flour on it until it’s 0.6 cm (~ ¼”) thick. It absolutely mustn’t be as thick as and inch.

Salt dough can be used for many things. Cut out shapes and bake on the backside of a baking tray at 90 oC (194 F) for 6 hours (if it’s about ¼” thick). For thicker shapes, use 175 oC (347 F) for 1 hour. (This would make the thinner shapes brown and hard to paint.)

For small 3D-shapes: Support them with curled metal foil while they’re in the oven. For larger 3D-shapes: Make the shape out of metal foil and cover it with dough. Bake according to thickness.

Make a coloured dough by adding:

  • Instant coffee
  • Cinnamon
  • Mustard powder
  • Paprika powder

Use mayo for a glaze to get a wet shiny look. ‘Paint’ with a beaten egg white mixed with 1 tsp of water for a light-brown colour.
