Lilith and I made some food for the birds and squirrels that visit our garden during winter. We thought they should have something nice for Yule as well.

We started by adding some linseed, chopped nuts, and a couple of handfuls of whole rye flour to a baking tray. Then we added melted fat to the tray, put it in the fridge to set, and cut it into shapes. We ended up mostly doing rectangles because the cookie cutters weren’t sharp enough to cut through.

We’re bringing some of it with us to the in-laws. Lilith’s grandpa feeds the birds all year. I hope this inspires you to do something for your critters 🙂

Do you set out food for the birds and other wildlife?

Thank you for bringing this up! Birds are starving during the winter months, and in our “civilised” areas they don’t find much food to begin with. If you’re too busy to make your own food (I love your idea, Linda! I make crackers for my own budgies sometimes), most supermarkets sell inexpensive wild bird seed to put in your garden or on nearby nature paths. It helps a lot 🙂

My pleasure 🙂 We buy our bird seed in 25 kg bags. But most shops have 2,5 kg ones.
